BIKES, WORK & FUN :
Sportster Softail frame
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FRAMES ON THIS PAGE ARE FOR PRE-2003 SOLID-MOUNTED ENGINES. LATER RUBBERMOUNTED ENGINES WILL NOT FIT.
Having introduced big twin softail frames in various guises, the next logical step was to build one to take sportster engines.
Other folks have also made sportster softails and there are a fair few around now, but they all use the stock big twin rear shocks slung underneath.
Unlike a big twin, though, there really isn’t any room under a sportster engine to mount them, so they all jack the engine up a few inches in the frame resulting in a bike that looks a bit odd.
We didn’t want this, and as we’ve never heard anyone say anything good about stock softail shocks, we have instead designed for the suspension a rising rate monoshock system using a monoshock unit.
This setup has proved to function and handle extremely well with none of the stock FXST’s poor damping or bottoming-out problems, resulting in a bike which is a real blast to ride.
This frame features a built-in battery carrier and accepts early type FXST fender struts, which we can make to suit your fender.
|We also make a
rubber mounted horseshoe type oil tank (which can be fitted and removed with the
engine in the frame) with matching left hand side cover, in chrome or bare
We now make the side panel with a spring loaded quick release catch mechanism.
On all our Sportster frames, we take the trouble to bend the lower LH cradle tube around the primary adjuster screw and the primary drain plug.
Nobody else does this, they either mount the engine too high or ask their customers to cut the adjuster bolt short and obscure the drain plug.
We can build these frames with various engine offsets, a 180 tyre needs 1" offset (which is actually on centre; a stock sportster has the enging offset to the left for some reason) a 200 tyre needs 1.375" offset. More offset than this is not really recommended. Offset sprockets or pulleys should be used to get fatter tyres than this.
The rearend is obviously also made wider to suit. We use stock FXST swingarm bearings. There is a lot less unsprung weight than a Harley FXST rearend. Bushes used in linkages are P.T.F.E. lined. All our framework is made of quality seamless tube and is T.I.G. welded in accurate jigs.
If you wish to use belt drive, which we recommend, the increased length makes it necessary to use the following parts: 27tooth front pulley, 55 tooth rear pulley, 136 t (2004 up rubbermount sportster) belt.
Frame assembly including the shock unit and linkages £1365
Oiltank/side cover: bare metal £195
We no longer offer stainless steel oiltanks, sorry.
